Silicone and saline breast implants
Women who desire to increase the size of their bust to create a more feminine silhouette choose breast augmentation, or breast implant surgery. Age, pregnancy, and dramatic weight loss can all decrease the elasticity and voluptuousness of the breasts. Women with breast augmentation should be encouraged, like other women, to undergo routine screening mammography at recommended intervals. Women who had very small breasts can have breasts of almost any size or shape. Likewise, women who were displeased with sagging breasts can find that they will then have breast akin to those that they possessed when at a younger age.
Implants that are too large have the “balloon” look, with the skin very taut around them, looking very artificial and not blending well with the rest of your upper body. Another choice to make is placement of the implants. Implant options can be narrowed to two types: Silicone (gel) and Saline (salt water). There is now a new generation of silicone gel implants, called MemoryGel(TM), recently approved by the FDA. Implant hardening was not observed in any of the patients.
Implants themselves can be of different size as well as the pockets they occupy be in different locations. Another option would be reducing the size of the larger breast through a reduction mammoplasty procedure. Implant rupture can occur from breast compression during mammography. Inform your mammography technologist of the presence of breast implants so that appropriate mammogram studies may be obtained.
Silicone filled — All implant shells are made of silicone. It is an inert substance that is very well tolerated by the body. Silicone implants are filled with the silicone before surgery. With saline implants, the shell can be inserted behind the breast tissue, and then filled with saline solution until the breast is the desired size. Silicone implants use a gel filling to create the size and shape of the implant. The advantage of silicone implants is that they generally look and feel more like natural breast tissue.
